7th Annual CFK Parenting Conference – 2011
In partnership with the Osoyoos Indian Band and with support from Success by 6®, Communities for Kids held its 7th Annual Parenting Conference at Sen Pok Chin School in Oliver BC on October 22, 2011. The day-long Conference was a great success with participants enjoying the opportunity to explore ideas on how to encourage and enhance the positive development of children up to 6 years of age. The key note speaker, Angela Roy, a performing artist and educator who explores and studies various arts, provided an introduction to the benefits of rhythm and percussion in early development, with an overview of songs and instruments from around the globe. She also led a workshop on Rhythmic Art. Other workshop topics included: Story Builder; Beyond the Hurt – Preventing Bullying; Become an ‘Askable Adult’; Sharing the Granny and Grandpa Kit with Syilx (Okanagan) Style; Parents as Literacy Star!; and Talk! Talk! Talk!. Display tables full of information on many aspects of caring for children lined the hallway, and wonderful door prizes donated by local businesses and agencies were given away throughout the day.
Plans for the 8th Annual Parenting Conference to take place in October in Penticton are now underway. Stay tuned for details!
