What is Success By 6®

Success By 6® is a province-wide early childhood development initiative working to support the healthy development of children from conception to age 6. (See the provincial Success By 6® website.)  Success By 6 ® is prevention-focused, research-informed and community-based. Its vision is a community where all children are valued, respected, nurtured, loved, and given the opportunity to develop to their full potential as creative, caring, competent, and responsible adults.

In the South Okanagan-Similkameen, Success By 6® is a member of the Communities for Kids (CFK) early childhood development (ECD) coalition. Success By 6® works in partnership with CFK  to achieve the coalition’s vision, mission and goals.

What does Success By 6® do?

Success By 6® builds and enhances community by engaging all citizens in support of ECD, and funding programs that strengthen services for young children and their families. This means bringing together all community stakeholders to identify a community’s ECD needs, and then develop and implement a plan to meet those needs.

Aboriginal Engagement: Ullus Naqsilt Project

In 2006, Success By 6® began a consultation process with the four First Nations in our region (the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Penticton Indian Band, and Osoyoos Indian Band), and Penticton's urban Aboriginal agency, the Ooknakane Friendship Center.

Our goal was to establish a working relationship with Aboriginal community members to discuss the importance of ECD, and how Success By 6® can work with the Aboriginal communities to support their ECD needs.

The result of this consultation was the establishment of the Ullus Naqsilt project in 2007-08.  The broad goal of the Ullus Naqsilt (meaning Gathering Family) project is to support the physical, mental, spiritual and cultural health and development of children aged 0-6yrs and their families. Each of the five communities develops and delivers an Ullus Naqsilt program that supports the broad goal of Ullus, but that is suited to the particular needs of their community members. Since 2007-08, Success by 6 has provided approximately $44,000 annually to support the Ullus Naqsilt program. With the provision of the 2010-11 project year funding we have contributed over $177,000 to help enhance ECD in our region's Aboriginal communities.  If you would like more information on this exciting project please contact the Success By 6® Project Coordinator, Blair Lischeron.

Success By 6 ® Fundraising

One way that Success By 6® helps communities support their ECD needs is by raising funds in communities to meet those needs. When community members, businesses and other organizations donate to Success By 6® to support their community’s ECD needs, those funds stay in that community.

You can make a donation to support children in your community by going to the  provincial Success By 6® website. See the Donations page on this website for more information.
