The Importance of Play

Play is a natural and necessary activity for children of all ages. When children play they learn about themselves and their community.  They tune into their creative mind to solve challenges and learn to cope with change.

Children learn while they are playing.  Through water and sand play they can learn math concepts and an appreciation for the natural world.  Dress-up helps children practice social skills and the use of their creative and imaginative skills. Art, music, and dance can help with their large muscles, while puzzles and blocks can help with their small muscles.  Playing games helps them learn cooperation and how to take turns.

Play materials need not be fancy or expensive; children can play with simple materials that challenge their creativity and imagination. Basic art supplies; paper, scissors, glue and crayons can be used for endless hours of fun.  Cardboard that is decorated can make a crown; folded paper can be a bird, a book or a doll blanket.  Blocks can be made from clean, used food boxes and can make houses, barns or space ships.  Sheets and towels can also make houses and play forts.

Children crave time with parents.  It makes them feel special.  Parents are encouraged to find time to spend playing with their kids on a regular basis.  Include one to one time as well as group time with all of the adults and kids in the home.  If you are a single parent or have an only child, occasionally invite family or friends over to play. Playing with your kids builds a bond that will last forever.  It lets your child know he or she is loved and appreciated.  It builds relationships and communication and helps the parent get to know and understand the uniqueness of each child.

Families can support their children’s well being, creativity and learning by providing plenty of opportunities for play. At all ages and stages children benefit from playing alone and exploring their own interests.  When playing with other children, social skills are learned and practiced. When adults support and encourage play, children get the message that play is important as well as fun!
