Welcome to the Osoyoos Community Table Page

About Us

The Osoyoos Communities for Kids (CFK) Community Table was established in October 2003. All members of the Osoyoos Table volunteer their time to support CFK's early childhood development (ECD) efforts in Osoyoos.

Members include parents, grandparents and representatives from

  • public health
  • speech-language pathology
  • childcare organizations
  • School District 53
  • infant development/Okanagan Boys and Girls Club
  • Osoyoos Parks and Recreation
  • RCMP Victims Assistance Unit
  • Kiwanis
  • Early Learning Centre

We meet monthly to consider Osoyoos’ ECD needs and how we may support those needs.

As we head into our 6th year, the Osoyoos CFK Table invites you to join our vibrant and enthusiastic group to help build and support early childhood development in Osoyoos.

Celebrating our Successes

"Communities for Kids values the contribution made by Osoyoos' Community Champions for children aged 0-6.   Starla Braithwaite of the Osoyoos Early Learning Centre and a CFK Osoyoos Table member, presents a Certificate of Appreciation to Isobel Hart of the Osoyoos Kiwanis Club.  Kiwanis is a valued member of the CFK Osoyoos Table. Kiwanis also supports the early literacy Next Step program, and the Terrific Kids program at the Osoyoos Elementary School and the Good Shepherd Christian School."

"Sarah Gattinger of the Sonora Community Centre (SCC) was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Alicia Osland of the CFK Osoyoos Table for the SCC's on-going and very successful programming for children aged 0-6.

The SCC's twice-weekly Parent & Tot program and their seasonal programs are well attended and greatly appreciated by families in Osoyoos."

Community Directories

"Since 2003, our CFK Table has been publishing a CFK Family Directory that outlines Osoyoos' ECD programs and services.  Printed copies are available at the library, the elementary school, the public health office, the Osoyoos Child Care Centre, and other places around the community.   If you'd like to keep a hard copy by your phone, see CFK Family Directory.

We recently expanded our listing of Osoyoos’ programs, services and facilities that support young children (see the Community Directory and Map Resources).

Play Equipment
The Osoyoos Parks and Recreation department offers a Parent and Tot program two mornings a week at the Sonora Community Centre. Communities for Kids provided $1,000.00 to purchase mats and play equipment used by this and other recreation programs. The equipment improves child safety in these valuable programs that build social skills and physical health.

Mother Goose
In 2006, the Osoyoos Child Care Society was awarded $1,500.00 of CFK funding to run an 8 week Mother Goose program for 3 and 4 year olds. This free program featured songs, rhymes, stories, and gave children and parents an opportunity to learn, sing, socialize, and have fun. The Sonora Community Centre is currently offering the Mother Goose program for Osoyoos families.

Advocacy
In December 2008, Patricia Gregory of UEY and Pat Buckland of CFK, supported by the Osoyoos CFK Table members, made a presentation to the newly elected Osoyoos Town Council.  The presentation emphasized how critically important the early years are to life-long health and wellbeing, and to familiarize the new council with CFK.  The most current research information on how Osoyoos children are doing in the areas of social, physical, and cognitive development was discussed.

ECD Awareness in Osoyoos
To promote the importance of healthy child development and raise public awareness of CFK, we display ECD information at community events, including “Ready, Set, Learn”, Gymboree, and at the Osoyoos Parks and Recreation program registration event.  We also have an ECD information display beside the Kindergarten room at the Osoyoos Elementary School.

The Osoyoos CFK Table has also made many presentations to raise ECD awareness among local service clubs and community organizations, including the Town Council, the Osoyoos Planning Committee, Osoyoos Recreation Commission, the Bhavsagar Sikh Temple, and the South Okanagan Ministerial Association.

Plans

The Osoyoos Table works to identify unmet ECD needs in the community. We are in the process of identifying a new project. Watch this web page for upcoming announcements.

Bianca loves to do puzzles at StrongStart. Doing puzzles helps develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and pre-reading skills.

Children of all ages love to swing and it's good for healthy child development.

Why do kids like to rock back and forth so much? Maybe they know it's good for their development.
