Welcome to the Oliver Community Table Page

About Us

The Oliver Communities for Kids (CFK) Community Table was established in October 2003. All members of the Oliver Table volunteer their time to support CFK’s early childhood development (ECD) efforts in Oliver.

Members include parents and representatives from

  • public health
  • childcare
  • School District #53
  • infant development
  • public library
  • Town Council
  • Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs
  • StrongStart Centre

We meet monthly to consider Oliver’s ECD needs and how we may support those needs.

As we head into our 6th year, the Oliver CFK Table invites you to join our vibrant and enthusiastic group.

Celebrating our Successes

Community Directories
Since 2003, our CFK Table has been publishing and updating a CFK Community Directory for Oliver that outlines the services and programs in our community. Printed copies are available at the library, elementary schools, public health, the Ministry of Children and Family Development office, and other places in town.  If you'd like to keep a hard copy by your phone, see CFK Community Directory.

We recently expanded a listing of Okanagan Falls’ programs, services and facilities that support young children (see the Community Directory and Map Resources).

Family Fair with Heart
Our CFK Table has celebrated Oliver’s young children and their families by organizing four Family Fair with Heart events.  Held at Oliver’s Community Centre, the Family Fair with Heart displays information from over 20 groups that provide services and programs for Oliver families.  This event has entertainment, crafts, draws for children, and an affordable Kids Pack lunch menu.  Our 5th Family Fair with Heart will take place on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Oliver Community Centre.  Please call Pat Buckland at 250-498-8433 for more information.  Come and enjoy the event with your young children!

Official Community Plan
Presentations to the municipal Planning Committee and Town Planner resulted in amendments to our Official Community Plan to include bylaws (read more) that are beneficial for families.

Festival of the Tomato: Kids’ Section
"In partnership with the Festival of the Tomato from 2005 to 2007, CFK joined the planning committee to help organize volunteers and setup the children's section.  The Festival provided materials for children's crafts and a sandbox treasure hunt, making the children section the most successful ever.  In 2006, the Festival of the Tomato made a generous donation of $250 to support CFK's ECD efforts."

Festival of the Grape: Kids’ Section
Each year on the first weekend of October, Oliver hosts the Festival of the Grape. Communities for Kids Table members have participated in planning the children’s section to ensure safe and age-appropriate fun for our youngest children.

Car Seat Safety Technician
Car seat safety is an important health matter for all children, especially those aged 0 to 6. Communities for Kids arranged for the training of Oliver’s car seat safety technician, and that person has been providing this free service to families in Oliver for three years. Check with Interior Health in Oliver, or the Osoyoos Indian Band Health Services, if you would like your child’s seat checked.

Safe Playgrounds
Communities for Kids donated $332 in 2005, to Oliver Parks and Recreation to install pea gravel at the Community Centre’s small playground.

Advocacy
In 2006, members of the Oliver CFK Table met with the newly elected Oliver area Member of Parliament, Alex Atamanenko (NDP). We met with Mr. Atamanenko to discuss how critically important the early years are to life long health and wellbeing, and to familiarize him with CFK.

ECD Awareness in Oliver
To promote the importance of healthy child development and raise public awareness of CFK, we display ECD information at community events, including “Ready, Set, Learn”, Festival of the Grape, Festival of the Tomato, and our Family Fair with Heart.  In addition to providing ECD information, CFK sets up a reading tent, and organizes book draws and physical activities at our display area for children to enjoy.

The Oliver Table has made many presentations promoting ECD awareness to local service clubs and groups, including the Town Council, the Bhavsagar Sikh Temple, and the South Okanagan Ministerial Association.
